Starting with our handy-dandy post about how to write a book review (applies to movies and games too!)
1. Let’s start here
2. LegendFiction Requirements for Book, Movie, & Game Roundups/Reviews
Max length: ~1200 words (about 250 words per title)
Review Roundups (Preferred) : 3 books connected by a clear theme
Single Book/Media Review: Introduce the story like you’re selling it, featuring the best parts of the opening action, up to the first 30%. After that, follow up with your review by connecting it to the right audience.
Paragraph Structure: Around 3 sentences per paragraph. Avoid long blocks. Focus on conversational, white space that is easy to read.
Opening Blurb: Create a TL:DR; for the top of the post, summarizing the main points, indicating why someone will enjoy reading to the end, and what they’ll get out of it.
How to Submit: Send us a DM below to pitch your post idea. If we accept, we’ll send you a form to submit through. We don’t accept any other formats.
Your Substack Profile: If you don’t have a Substack profile, you will need one - for the byline and backlinks! (You don’t have to start your own Substack at all)
3. What Happens After Submission
We read every pitch and draft with care. If accepted, we might do minor edits for clarity, flow, or formatting — anything bigger will go back to you for your sign-off. If your piece needs more development, we’ll let you know with suggestions.
We aim to publish within 2–3 weeks of acceptance. You’ll be notified by DM or email when it’s live.
Voice & Vibe: Think: thoughtful friend over coffee. You’re not writing for The New Yorker — but you’re also not dumping Goodreads rants. We want informed, honest, fun writing — like a best friend telling the truth to inspire you. Be funny if you want. Be poetic if that’s your thing. But always be clear.
Who Can Submit:
Indie and trad-pub authors
Review bloggers, media curators, and literary deep-divers
Nerds with taste and opinions and a great writing style
What We Love: Speculative fiction, mythic and heroic narratives, philosophical sci-fi, literary fantasy, classic adaptations, and pop culture with depth, etc. If it makes you ask: what does this story say about being human?, we’re probably into it.
Need to Remove your Content? Just email us. We’ll consider your request, and where our team considers it appropriate, work to take it down within 7 business days, per our terms.
What We Don’t Publish: Erotica, nihilism-as-style, shallow shock value. We want art that forms souls — not frays them.
Images: Want to include images in your post? Go for it — just make sure you have rights to them, or use copyright-free photos like Unsplash. We love original art, screenshots (with credits if necessary), or memes (if they don’t feel like inside jokes). If unsure, drop us a note. AI Generated images are welcome, but we have a high standard of excellence.
4. Disclaimer: nobody’s getting paid - yet.
Not yet. Not Dom (the founder). Not the writers. Not even the interns we don’t have. This Substack (and future magazine) is powered 100% by passion, popcorn, and possibly too much caffeine. And that means the reviews? Totally unfiltered and deeply honest. No one’s fluffing up a bestseller for a comission. We’re writing what we really think—because we care.
You can proudly tell your friends that you’re a LegendFiction author. And they won’t know what it means yet… but they will. They will.
Coming soon: LegendHaven Magazine
All submissions accepted for publication are shared online, right here on Substack.
Our team then makes a selection for our print magazine, which may include your content. No promises. We are working on our first issue, and plan to publish after our October 2025 LegendHaven convention. If we select your post, we will let you know!
At this time, no payment will be provided to participants. All income generated goes toward fees for resources, materials, software, and to pay our team for their time.
As soon as possible, we will update our agreements to begin paying authors for submissions. Rates are TBD, but we dream of them being competitive and exciting.
5. Our promises about the submission process
We are a tiny team of volunteers, but here’s what we can promise:
We will work hard to reply to every submission that follows our pitch format in a timely and professional manner - within 5 business days. We focus our time on members who pay attention to our requests. (Basically, ignore us, and we’ll focus on other people.)
We will provide suggestions for improvement, or point you to resources to improve your submission.
If we decline your submission, we will let you know that it does not fit our needs at this time. Our team has many demands on our attention, so no other reason will be given.
We take your title and blurb under suggestion, but expect that we may rewrite your title, subtitle, and blurb to better connect your content with our community.
We do not guarantee under any circumstances that we will publish every submission we receive.
Content is published to the web, and not to the email list (to avoid overwhelm). We include the best posts in a roundup once a week to email our list.
6. Your content copyrights
You retain 100% of your rights to your content. You can restack it or post your content to your own blog immediately. You can syndicate your posts to other blog networks, as long as you include a closing sentence that says ‘First published on LegendHaven Magazine’ with a backlink.
Promote yourself: We encourage you to include a single call to action at the end of your post, such as full image ad for your latest book, your services, a link to your Substack, or an option for people to send you money to keep writing, or more. Just ask with your questions!
By publishing on LegendHaven, you are granting the LegendHaven team and magazine a non-revocable, universal right to use, post, share, remix, and include your article in future content to promote LegendHaven.
Limitation of liability: By participating in the LegendHaven magazine and online website, you agree to fully release, indemnify, and hold harmless LegendHaven and all members involved from any and all liability, claims, demands, causes of action, damages, losses, or expenses arising out of or in connection with your participation in this magazine—whether known or unknown, anticipated or unanticipated, under any and all circumstances.
Copyright Infringement
If you believe your copyrighted work has been used improperly, please contact us with your claim. We will investigate and remove any infringing material as appropriate.
AI / Generative Tools: Contributors may use AI tools to assist their creativity. Our team understands the benefits and limits of these tools, and can advise or make recommendations. Submissions are evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
Plagiarism: Plagiarism is not accepted, naturally. If discovered, it is grounds for warning and removal.
Changes to Terms and Conditions: The LegendFiction team reserve the right to update or modify these terms and conditions at any time. By submitting to this magazine, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agreed to abide by these terms and conditions. Failure to comply may result in content removal or a decline on future submissions.
7. Send us your pitch
If all this makes sense to you, and you agree, then send us a DM with your questions, or your pitch! Don’t email your finished post. A great pitch that shows you’re paying attention:
Your title idea
Clear blurb that outlines where your post will go
Simple outline
Your call to action with a live link (e.g.; promote your book)
Sounds good? We’re stoked!
If we like your pitch, we’ll send you a link to our form that makes reviews super easy.
Here are the questions;
What instantly pulled you in? What’s the vibe or emotional promise of this story? Is it a genre you usually love—and what makes this one stand out? Was there a moment, mood, or image that made you need to keep going?
What moment stuck with you? Describe a single scene, visual, or idea that’s still in your head. How did it make you feel—excited, uneasy, inspired? Share something personal: what did it remind you of? Who did you talk to about it?
Why should someone try it? Have you seen others talking about it—quotes, reviews, fan buzz? Is it quick to get into or easy to binge? What would you say to a friend who’s on the fence?
