We had eight absolutely fantastic submissions. If we could we would have produced them all. There were several that deserve special mentions:
Mary Rose Kreger - Fiona’s Choice
Suzanna Linton - The Kindness of Family
Gabriella Batel - Antivenom
What we were looking for in this contest: A world that we could see, immediate immersion, dialogue that told the story, and distinct character voicing. And in each of those we looked at how sound effects and dramatization could enhance and bring out what was already written.
Taking on Karina’s story is going to be a great challenge and we look forward to bringing it to life and producing an excellent audio epic for her and you. Congrats to Karina and to all those that submitted. I thank this community very much for being a part of this endeavour and look forward to doing more with you.
What is Audio Epic?
In a rickety old ranch truck in the back forty of the badlands of New Mexico, twenty-six years ago, is when I first heard the muffled and compressed radio drama, “The Shadow” on AM radio. Since then I’ve enjoyed and devoured audio dramas and now podcasts. I’ve loved every iteration of storytelling from verbal, visual, written, and audible.
My mother was a terrific storyteller keeping me and my sister entertained while we rode many a mile horseback in harsh weather, and would finish the day with a Joan Baez ballad by the fireplace. When I met my future husband in a bookstore and we started writing songs together touring the US and Europe playing music, and performing stories I’d written, I felt like I was fulfilling my calling.
Fast forward a decade and another evolution of my storytelling began; writing a novel, but instead of going straight to print we went to the podcasting world. Enter 1232, an audio epic. We poured everything into it to create a cut above from what I could find in the fantasy world of audio and once again following a calling I needed to be obedient to.
Combining the experience of storytelling with the production my husband and I’ve achieved through music, film and podcasts, as well as our driven passion, we wanted to do more. As we wait for the pieces to fall into place for our next projects we opened up the contest to LegendHaven members to produce one of their short stories as an audio epic.
What is an audio epic?
It is a fully narrated, fully dramatized, sound designed, and originally scored audio drama. Narration keeps the listener grounded, dramatization captures the characters with incredible voice actors, sound design immerses you into a high-fi audio world and music is the cherry on top for conveying emotion written within.
Stay tuned, we’ll share more updates on this exciting project soon!
Stay Courageous,
Callie Sioux
