Let’s meet Allison!
What is your dream as an author, and what are you doing to get there?
My dream is to one day make a living off of my creative works. I launched my small business this year, Trinity Tree Publishing, which is all about helping authors write, edit, and publish their faith-based books. I do this through offering editing services, writing coaching, speaking at conferences and events, and writing my own books and writings.
I recently launched a podcast called The Work of Thy Hands where I interview fellow Christian creatives. It is my dream to have my ministry of helping others self-publish their books.
How do you avoid burnout from all the pressure of being an author, and get back your creative spark?
I always take Sundays off as a day of rest to recharge, regroup, and spend time with loved ones. I've found this helps me to avoid burnout, and I also make sure not to neglect life's essentials: proper nutrition, exercise, and good sleep. I also enjoy spending time with my pets (who often end up in my stories).
I find that if something isn't working, particularly with social media, I don't have to continue using a medium that isn't yielding positive results. It's okay to step away from something and try something else, particularly as far as marketing goes.
What is your current WIP about and why does it matter to you?
I am currently working on completing my two series, one fiction and the other non-fiction. I am working on a four-book prayer devotional series on the mysteries of the Rosary, as well as completing the last book in my YA dystopian science fiction series called The Divided Kingdom.
I have been working on the fiction series ever since I was in the 8th grade, so this series speaks to the early roots of my writing career. The non-fiction series focuses on a spiritual theme of reflection for readers and is a product of my ministry experience as a faith formation director and as a theology student in my master's program.
How would you describe your spirituality, the unique way your faith is present to you as you enter more seriously into it?
My Catholic spirituality definitely informs my writing; I would say it is at the core of all the worlds I create, be they implicit or explicit. My characters wrestle with truth, both in their own lives and in the lives of others.
I like to believe that in all my writing, the transcendent shines through, and readers can get a glimpse of the Creator of the universe in how the story invites the readers to embark on an adventure through brokenness toward wholeness.
When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer, and what did you write about?
I've loved to write ever since I could hold a pen. I would write about my stuffed animals or imaginary lands I created in my head. I would stay up late scribbling on paper and eventually typing on my own computer.
I loved the way words could bring something to life--people, worlds, experiences. I felt at home in the worlds I created, because at some level, your writing is a part of you, an extension of yourself, and your understanding of life.
What is your publication preference, and why does it work for you so well?
In 2021, when I first began my professional author journey, I had pursued the traditional publishing route, as most do. However, my book was never picked up by any Catholic publisher, so I made the decision to self-publish, and I've never looked back since!
I absolutely love the freedom of self-publishing to plan your release schedule and be able to take your book through each stage of the publishing process. It is certainly a learning curve at first, but by watching YouTubers and joining the Fiat Self-Publishing Academy, I've now self-published three books, with two more in the works this year.
I have learned and grown so much, and I'm now at the point where I enjoy mentoring other writers as they write, edit, and self-publish their faith-based books.
What are your favorite books, movies, games, or other media that inspire you?
Growing up, I loved a fantasy series by Irish author Derek Landy, the Skullduggery Pleasant series about a young girl and a skeleton detective who go on perilous and wild magical missions to save the world from impending doom.
I also enjoyed reading the Sister's Grimm series by author Michael Buckley, which is a spin-off adventure series based on the Brother's Grimm (who I am actually related to in my ancestry!).
I love tales of adventure, and quirky relationships between unlikely characters who team up against the odds to save their family/people/world, etc.
If you didn’t write, what would you do for a living?
I would be doing something with animals! When I was growing up, I wanted to be a veterinarian, marine or wildlife biologist, or run my own animal rescue. Having a library with animals in it would be super cool!
Right now, I have a Pug, a rabbit, a guinea pig, and two hamsters!
